The Whole Story on continuing education in Philadelphia

Peirce College launched an awareness campaign this fall that was different than anything we've done before. We wanted to tell Philadelphians The Whole Story about Peirce, and did it by blanketing Frankford Transportation Center with bold banners calling out major ways Peirce can help improve the professional lives of working adults in Philadelphia.

Seeking both a response to our Whole Story campaign and a read on how a few Philadelphians feel about continuing education, we headed to Frankford. Our team of bloggers wanted to know what Frankford commuters thought about the potential impact a degree could have on their careers and their quality of life. So they asked them, and caught it all on tape.

Click play on the video below to see what Philadelphians had to say about their education and where it has taken them, or where they hope it will one day soon. Thanks to all the commuters who took a few minutes out of their day to share their story. As for the rest of you, what's your story? We'd love to hear it.

Career Development Services Center opens doors to students and alumni

From Oct. 11-15, the Career Development Services department is celebrating CDS Student Appreciation Week -- our way of letting students know we’re here in our new space! We want students and alumni to take advantage of our presence, our services, and our new location. We want you to come through our doors to take a look at everything that is available to you to help you build your career path.

The invitation to visit us in our new CDS Center (sixth floor of College Hall, room 67) does not expire at the end of the week! We welcome visitors at any time, and the CDS team is always eager to walk students and alumni through the new resources available to help you in your career development, whether you are searching for your first job or looking for a career change after 20 years in the same job.

Here’s an added incentive -- all students and alumni who come in will automatically be entered in our raffle to win a free business suit. At the end of the week, two winners (one man and one woman) will be selected. They will even have personal shoppers! Members of our CDS Employer Advisory Board who are well-versed in professional image management will accompany the winners and guide them in selecting an appropriate suit. Keep an eye out for an announcement of the winners!

And if you can’t make it in person, we’ve put together a virtual tour to make sure you know the resources at your fingertips. From mock interviews and resume review, to internship opportunities and the online job board or job club, it is our mission at CDS to help you find and navigate a suitable career path. Students Shahidah Oliver, Mark D’Annunzio and Winifred Clarkson-Wise were kind enough to sit down with us (thanks again, you two!) to share some insight about their experiences with CDS.

Has Career Development Services helped you along the way? If so, we’d love to hear how, so we can find out what benefits Peirce students and alumni the most! Please feel free to leave a comment in the comments section below, or stop by and tell us your story.

Peirce smartphone applications bring mobile access to College

How many of you reading this own a cell phone? How about a smartphone? For those of you iPhone or Android phone users, Peirce recently launched new, free applications to expand the mobile access to resources at the College.

The new Peirce apps can be run on Apple iPhones and iPads, as well as Droid-powered phones. Students today want and expect fast access to information wherever they are, and the ability of colleges and universities to deliver that information on new and expanding communications platforms is extremely important.

We conducted a survey to find out the need and demand from our own student population, and we heard you loud and clear -- you want mobile access! We value student feedback, so we worked hard to respond to that need and are excited to launch the new apps.

The apps include features such as:
  • Student course lists
  • Faculty and staff directories
  • Campus overview and directions
  • The Peirce College blog
We put together two quick demo videos so you can see a sample of how the apps function. Click play on the videos below to get a preview. A full news release issued on BusinessWire outlines additional details about the applications. Check out the apps at the Apple App Store or Android Market and let us know what you think!

Student resources expand with new space and new technology

Thursday, Oct. 7 marked the official opening of two newly renovated spaces at the College when the Career Development Services staff welcomed visitors to the new CDS Center, and the renovated library was open for tours. We encourage our students to take advantage of the improvements and investments that Peirce has made on their behalf! These spaces and resources are here to further enhance the educational experience – so please come on in and check out the new technology and resources!

To further celebrate their new space and spread the news of their existing services, CDS will be hosting their own CDS Student Appreciation Week Oct. 11-15. So, be on the lookout for information and updates from the CDS team this week!

Accounting degree program introduced at Peirce

Peirce is keeping a finger on the pulse of job trends in the Philadelphia region. Why does this matter so much to us? Because it matters to our students who are trying to find a new career. On that note, I have some more good news on the job front.

The changing landscape of financial regulation and increased scrutiny of financial reporting and accounting practices in general means a higher demand for accountants, auditors, and related occupations. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the accounting profession is expected to see much faster than average employment growth due to these changes.

Understanding the region’s employment outlook allows us to provide the corresponding education that prepares Peirce students to capitalize on those opportunities. That’s why in addition to our recently launched healthcare degree programs, which will put the 45,000 healthcare jobs headed to this region in reach of our graduates, we’re further expanding our degree program offerings with a new Bachelor of Science Degree in Accounting.
