Peirce College Season of Giving – Thank You!

As 2015 comes to a close, we want to thank our Peirce family for all you've done to help those in need over the past few weeks during this holiday season. Here's a look at all the ways we've been giving back during our Season of Giving.

  • Thank you to our Peirce community members who participated in our annual American Red Cross blood drive. Our donations will go on to help 36 patients at area hospitals. One donation can help save the lives of up to three people, according to the American Red Cross, so every donation truly counts!
  • We also collected more than 75 toys and books for families in need as part of the Youth Action Toy Drive. These gifts were given to families living at HELP in West Philadelphia to brighten up their holiday seasons.

  • For the past six holiday seasons, the Peirce community has also collected money to purchase uniforms for elementary students in need at Thomas May Peirce Elementary School. This year we were able to raise money to purchase 144 uniform pieces, including cardigans, shirts, pants, jumpers, socks, and tights. Students who have been identified by the school’s staff will receive some of the pieces, and the rest will be kept in the nurse’s office and issued to students as needed.
  • Finally, in honor of our 150th anniversary, we collected more than 150 pieces of business attire for use in our Career Development Services Career Closet! These items will ensure our male students are dressed to impress on their next interview.

Thank you to everyone who helped make these donations possible! We’re proud that we were able to brighten the holidays for those in our community this season.

The Next 150 Years: Delivering Degree Programs that Fit the Needs of Working Adults and Employers

It has been truly special to celebrate our 150th anniversary and affirm our commitment to equipping working adults in the Philadelphia region to achieve their goals and successfully fulfill workforce needs. This historic anniversary gave us many opportunities to celebrate our great legacy with students, alumni, staff, and partners.

Besides celebrating, this year has been about establishing the blue print that will define Peirce as it enters its next 150 years.  In April, we launched our three year strategic plan with a vison to become the recognized higher education leader in providing adult learners direct and customized paths to employer-valued skills and credentials.  By implementing the plan, we will introduce new flexible learning platforms that better facilitate degree completion, expand our partnerships with regional employers, and develop customized approaches to guidance and support services.

Since 1865, it has been the amazing men and women who have come through our doors as students and left as graduates who have made Peirce a significant institution in the region. Over the next 150 years, Peirce will continue to be student-focused, preparing our graduates for triumphant careers in tomorrow’s workplace.

Thank you from all of us here at Peirce for helping us celebrate our 150th anniversary. Please join us as we step boldly and distinctively into the next 150.

Happy holidays, everyone!

Peirce College Professor Kathleen Watson Elected to National Board

Peirce Healthcare Professor Kate Watson was recently elected to the Dental Quality Alliance, a board which votes on health policy and professional standards of practice for healthcare providers across dentistry.  Her position is effective immediately and will require her to travel to Chicago twice a year for Board meetings.

Professor Watson will be able to use her experiences and expertise in patient-centered care, cultural competency, public health, and health policy in order to better serve the Board and to inform her own votes.  Professor Watson is excited to learn more about the challenges of dentistry, as a subset of the healthcare industry, and promises to share her new findings with students in the healthcare administration program here at Peirce.

"I'm already lucky that I get to share my experience in mental health and social services with students, but now I will be able to share knowledge about an area of the industry that is relatively new to me,” Professor Watson explained.

Did you know that many professional organizations are required to have a public member on their board?  A board of directors usually seeks a public member who is outside of the profession, but who may have some experience that would useful.  For example, Professor Watson has no experience in dentistry, so she is considered “outside of the field.”  However, Professor Watson has many years of experience working in healthcare and analyzing healthcare policy, making her a good candidate for this type of position.

Peirce students would also be excellent candidates for the public member position because of their experiences in business, legal studies, and healthcare.  As a public member, you would be present in the board meetings, and in most cases, you would have full voting rights, with the opportunity to effect change.  This is an excellent way to network and to add something unique to your resume.
